On September 11, 2013, press releases announced that an agreement in principle had been reached eight days earlier between 15 insurers and Option consommateurs regarding an out-of-court settlement of the class action instituted further to the January 1998 ice storm.

Bertrand Paiement and Stéphane Roy, two of Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melançon’s lawyers practising in insurance litigation and class actions, represent 12 of the 15 insurers signatories to this agreement.

This coming October 25th, the Superior Court of Québec will hear the parties’ submissions with a view to approving this agreement that provides for the payment of an amount of 40 million dollars to more than 690,000 insured persons, without any admission of liability.
