Geneviève Laurin joined our team as a student in 2009. She is a graduate of McGill University’s Faculty of Law, where she obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.). Geneviève also obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish (B.A.) from the University of Ottawa in 2005 and a Master’s in International Studies (M.Sc.) from Université de Montréal in 2007. Her thesis was on the creation of international partnerships between non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
During her years at McGill’s Faculty of Law, Geneviève was selected to represent the university at the prestigious Pierre-Basile Mignault Moot and was awarded the Coupe Éditions Yvon-Blais in the final for the second best pair of pleaders. She is co-founder and has been Vice-president, Communications, of Lawyers Without Borders-McGill. She has also acted as a volunteer for the Court Accompaniment Program at McGill, as a volunteer for Project Genesis, and as a volunteer legal assistant at the McGill Legal Information Clinic. Furthermore, she has taken a course in Cree Legal Order at the Mistissini Reserve in northern Quebec,
Geneviève masters four languages (French, English, Spanish and Portuguese) and has also spent one year studying at the University of Grenada, Spain during her initial Bachelor studies. After having acted as Information Officer at the International Offices of the University of Ottawa and Université de Montréal respectively, she went on to do a traineeship in the International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) with Equitas (International Centre for Human Rights Education). These numerous stays in Brazil led her to occupy the position of Project Officer for Ecomaris, a non-profit organization operating in the Amazon region of Brazil. Her mandate involved the creation of partnerships with Brazilian NGOs working in the field of environment. She still acts as a consultant to Ecomaris today.
Geneviève has a lively interest in environmental and natural resources law, energy law, intellectual property law, entertainment law, class actions and litigation matters in general. She is currently taking a Master’s course focused on environmental impact assessments (EIA) as well as a summer program with CERIUM on international environmental law. She is also interested in alternative methods of dispute resolution and has completed the McGill/Penn State Summer Arbitration Program.
In her free time, Geneviève dances the flamenco and plays the accordion. She enjoys cross-country skiing, cycling, soccer, hockey, yoga and various outdoor activities.
